Why Did CBS Hate Gavin MacLeod?

They gave everyone on the MTM show their own spin off but not him.

Even Georgette got a show, although they had to pair her with Betty White, because no one could hear her.

Still MacLeod got the last laugh when his smash hit "Love Boat" placed #5 for the year, beating the hell out of MTM's best yearly showing.

No one watched "The Love Boat" because MacLeod was the star. They watched it for the guest stars. He was a supporting character most of the time.

Ted's show was not on CBS. I think it was on ABC.

He wasn't actually much of an actor.

The Ted Knight Show was on CBS in 1978. They buried it on Saturday night at 8:30 — ironically, 30 minutes before The Love Boat — which had become a graveyard for CBS. So it's not like they rolled out the red carpet.

It got yanked in six episodes. Betty White also got the hook after 13 eps that year — a huge embarrassment for MTM and the network.

Sidenote: The dirty secret about MTM's biggest shows is that they were timeslot hits dependent on All in the Family. Ratings for the Mary Tyler Moore Show collapsed on Saturday after CBS moved AITF to Monday in 1975, which made Rhoda a huge hit. Ratings for Rhoda tanked whenever it was moved away from AITF thereafter.

(The Ted Knight Show was not an MTM show; instead, it was a total piece of shit.)
