I wonder why the lesbian director did not understand that the drag queens were making fun of extremely wealthy people during the OPULENCE scene?

I never thought about that before. It'd be consistent with the historical cakewalk, when African Americans made fun of fancy white functions.

Crime this wasn’t nominated for an academy award. I remember a memeber of the documentary division saying that this was too trivial and fringe, and wasn’t important enough to deserve recognition

Today in 2018 GLADD would consider this film to be anti-Trans because of what Pepper LaBeija says here about transitioning/sex changes, etc.

I read about that as well R4. The website I read it on said how she was probably being robbed, or his/her life was in danger.

So this thread inspired me to watch it again for the very first time since I saw it in the movie theater. It was scary how true the stuff she says is, at least for me. Makes me wish I'd paid more attention back then.
Trying to remember what struck me about it the first time, probably the class dynamic referenced by OP.

R6, what was so scary about what she says? Are you into drag or were you at one time? Two men I know one who is gay, and the other who is bisexual both told me that they at one time were into dressing in full drag and I was surprised since they are both very masculine, not femme/queenie, and picturing them in drag is very odd since they are both not built for it.

She mentioned how people are constantly revising their expectations down, which I've done myself mostly professionally but actually also romantically now that I think about it. Not a drag queen, but an academic.

I think that's human nature R8? Or as the saying goes, "That's life."
