This is a tribute to the remarkable life he lived. Jay was born Marvin Jay Bailey on May 20, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to his proud parents, Marvin Jon Bailey and Mary Elizabeth Bailey. His journey in this world was marked by dedication, perseverance, and an unyielding commitment to family, friends, and his country. He was predeceased by his brother, Captain Craig Bailey, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout his life. Jay is survived by a loving and supportive network of family. He shared his life with his cherished wife, Elaine Wilco, who stood by his side during both the challenges and triumphs that life presented. Jay was a devoted father to four sons, Travis Jay, Ryan Jon, Matthew Coe, and Brad Michael. Through his loving marriage to Elaine, he also embraced two stepsons, David and Brian Nahodyl. The Bailey family continued to grow with the addition of grandchildren who brought joy and vitality to their lives: Madison, Dylan, Emily, Kaidyn, Isaac, and Ryder from the Bailey clan, and Lyra and Will from the Nahodyl lineage.

At the age of 19, he embarked on a journey of service and enlisted in the army alongside three of his closest friends. His military career spanned 12 honorable years and included multiple tours of duty in Vietnam. Throughout his service, Jay held a variety of roles and earned several esteemed titles, including Paratrooper, Jump Master, Staff Sergeant, Medic, Special Forces Green Beret, and Reservist. His contribution to the military was both valiant and inspiring. Following his military career, Jay pursued higher education, graduating from the University of South Florida, thanks to the G.I. Bill. During this time, he was a devoted father, working tirelessly to provide for his growing family. The lessons he learned from his military service, such as resilience and a commitment to excellence, continued to guide him as he ventured into new chapters of his life. Over the years, Jay’s journey took him across the country due to both career opportunities and personal developments. Eventually, he settled in the Atlanta area, where he founded a successful business as a financial advisor. It was during this time that he met his second wife, Sandy, and together they welcomed Brad, Jay’s fourth child, into the world.
Jay was a pillar in various organizations and associations that reflected his diverse interests and strong sense of community. He was an active member of the Jewish War Veterans and the Vietnam Veterans Business Association. His culinary skills shone through as he engaged with Les Marmitons Chefs, an organization of passionate food enthusiasts. As a Mensa member, his sharp intellect and love of stimulating conversation found a welcoming home. He was a longtime member of Etz Chaim Synagogue in East Cobb, where he forged deep connections and found solace in his faith. In more recent times, he became a member of Temple Beth Tikvah in Roswell, a spiritual community where he continued to grow spiritually. Jay’s unwavering dedication and bravery during his military service were recognized through numerous awards and medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Parachute Badge, Air Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and his service continues to inspire generations.
Beyond his accomplishments, Jay was a man known for his generous heart, enthusiastic spirit, and boundless love for engaging conversations. His interests extended to diverse areas, including but not limited to books, skydiving, golf, tennis, and travel. He lived life to the fullest, embracing each adventure with the spirit of a true explorer. His friendship was a trusted anchor to those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his wisdom enriched every conversation. The service will be held at Temple Beth Tikvah, located at 9955 Coleman Road, Roswell, GA 30075. In honor of Jay’s memory, memorial gifts may be made to Temple Beth Tikvah, Cobb Salutes (Veterans), or Weinstein Hospice.
