COMA (1978)

Starring Michael Douglas and Geneieve Bujold

I read the Mad Magazine comic version of Coma about 1,000 times as a kid.

When I finally saw the movie on HBO as a teenager, there were no surprises.

I enjoyed both iterations a great deal, but the Mad Magazine one is closest to my heart.

The Coma miniseries that came out earlier this millennium was simply awful.

A title that just baits critics.

Love this flick! Love the way Genvieve Bujold says, "They're putting people into COMAS!"

Richard Widmark is also world-class as an evil doctor.

I watched this movie recently. It took me 45 years since it came out, but I was pretty bored by it. Most books are better than their films, but I felt the premise had so much potential I’d be better off reading the book and skipping the film.

It was a remarkable if undersung movie for its time. The creepy brutalist building they used for the Jefferson Institute (where the coma patients are held) was quite memorable from a visual perspective, as was the haunting scene where Bujold discovers all the coma victims suspended in a gigantic room from wires.

The ending, where Widmark's evil doctor gets outwitted, was very well done.
