Bronski Beat founder Steve Bronski dies

Steve Bronski, co-founder and keyboard player in 1980s pop group Bronski Beat, has died at the age of 61.

Great article. Never knew much about them outside the one song.

Sad. So young. Also, hard to read since I'm 61. Does Jimmy Somerville tweet?

This one has hit me very hard, as I was lucky enough to count Steve as a friend. We made contact through MySpace and met up for drinks, did some recordings together and he even thanked me in the credits for the last Bronski Beat album the Age Of Reason a few years ago.

R2 - I don't think Jimmy personally is very good with technology / social media. His management retain a strong presence though, especially on Instagram and Facebook.

Nothing on his Facebook page yet.. if that's his, or his team.

He and they were pioneers when they were really needed.

What's taken for granted now (whether correctly or not) is partly from them and a few other non-gaming entertainers (Ahem, dear Mr. Bowie and dead Mr. Reed.) who fought for visibility and music relevant to real gay lives.

Bronski Beat, Erasure and the Pet Shop Boys from my favorite bands in the early 1990's. They all had such a great sound.

Bronski Beat was my favorite band of all time, came out just when their music came out. It was a god send. And I still like the music today, brings back so many memories I tear up at times.

I agree, but he has resurfaced on YouTube, and last I checked had 6 million views. Great reprise version.

I get upset listening to Somerville singing falsetto.

Professional counter-tenors can do it without damaging their voices but Somerville and other untrained ragers sound like they're tearing themselves.

And he has a deep speaking voice.

This group had a profound effect on me with the lyrics of their songs and their unique sound. I was 18 in ‘83 when they had their first hit. AIDS was in its beginning stages.

Steve was cuter but ive always been and still am hot for Jimmy.

His death sounds horrific. I hope this isn't true.

R1, you must listen to Bronski Beat's and Jimmy Somerville's back catalogues. You won't regret it.

Sad, their music really only thing I had when I was coming out.
